Devil of the Deep is the fifth episode of the eight season of River Monsters.

Episode Description[]

Angler Jeremy Wade's cases usually involve freshwater culprits, but with reports of a deep water serial killer in Mexico's Sea of Cortez, he must step out of his comfort zone and into uncharted depths in search of the red devil.

Episode Summary[]

The episode begins with Jeremy Wade hearing a report that five dead fishermen have washed up on a beach in Mexico's Sea of Cortez. Jeremy Wade decides to investigate.

After failing to catch a likely suspect, he turns to mythology, which leads him to the story of the Kraken. Thinking that the culprit might be some kind of squid, he quickly hears other reports of these deadly predators wreaking havoc. Apparently, a species of squid known as the Humboldt Squid arrived in Mexican waters. It was known for its vicious attacks on humans. However, Humboldt Squid populations had since left the Sea of Cortez.

Jeremy then travels to Peru, the known home of these creatures. He travels out to sea to catch one, but the weather becomes very foul, and Jeremy and his crew suffer from seasickness. Eventually, they are able to catch a few of these creatures.

However, at the end of the episode, knowing everything he does, Jeremy concludes that a Humboldt Squid swarm would completely devour anyone who fell overboard, leading him to assume that the report at the beginning of the episode was a hoax.
