The Golden Mahseer appeared in the Series premiere of Mighty Rivers, the episode titled "The Ganges". At the end of the episode, Jeremy Wade traveled to the Mountainous regions of Northern India where he searched for this fish. It took a lot of trying, but in the end, he was able to hook one and bring it in. He stated the significance of this fish, and the hope it represented. It was also the fish that Jeremy caught on his first adventure while he was in his early twenties. At that point, he thought that after catching this fish he would find a "proper job". This was stated in the episode as well.
Description[]
The Golden Mahseer is one of the largest member of the group and one of the largest cyprinids; it has been known to reach 2.75 m (9 ft 0 in) in length and 54 kg (119 lb) in weight, found in rapid streams, riverine pools, and lakes in the Himalayan region. Its native range is within the basins of the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers.
It's the endangered species, threatened by habitat loss, habitat degradation and overfishing, and it already has declined by more than an estimated 50%.
