The Giant Mottled Eel (Anguilla marmorata) is the largest species of anguillid eel, as it can grow up to 6.6 feet in length and 45 pounds in weight. Adults typically live in fresh and brackish estuarine water, but they do sometimes migrate into the open ocean.

South Pacific Terrors[]

Two mysterious disappearances from the Pacific island of Fiji lured Jeremy Wade to investigate in Season 7 Episode 5, titled "South Pacific Terrors". One came from the remote, mountainous interior of the island, whereas the other came from a river closer to the coast. The coastal attack was eventually explained by the Giant Trevally , but this beast could not explain the freshwater attack that occured behind a dam deep in the interior. Due to circular wounds on the diver that was killed here, some locals blamed an octopus, however, this seemed unlikely as octopuses do not typically venture into freshwater, certainly not miles inland. Jeremy eventually heard of an eel that lived beneath a rock, and when venturing down, found that there was a cave system beneath the rock that was far too extensive to explore without serious equipment. Jeremy then fished over the rock and caught a Giant Mottled Eel. Eels are known to feed using a death roll, so a Giant Mottled Eel seemed like a logical explaination for the attack.
