The term Moray Eel refers to members of the family Muraenidae. Almost all of these eels are marine, with a few being found in brackish water. The largest species is the Giant Moray, which can grow to 9.8 feet in length, and 66 pounds in weight, making it one of the largest species of eel. Giant Morays are considered hazardous to people as many provoked and unprovoked attacks have been recorded.

While attempting to track down the origin of the legend of the Sea Serpent, Jeremy initially focuses on the most common explanation, eels. Giant Morays are some of the largest eels known, and they are Jeremy Wade's initial suspect. There are plenty of cases of these attacking humans. Jeremy looks into one where an individual removed a man's finger. However, Sea Serpent legends are known across the globe, Morays simply don't grow large enough to match the legendary descriptions of the Sea Serpent, causing Jeremy to dismiss them from his suspect list.
