The Mutilator is the first episode of the third season of River Monsters.
Episode Description[]
Jeremy Wade travels to Papua New Guinea to investigate a spate of bizarre deaths on the Sepik River. An island renowned for cannibalism, macabre rituals, and head hunters, Wade is on the trail of a creature reported to devour certain male body parts.
Episode Summary[]
Deep in the jungles of Papua New Guinea, two separate incidents have attracted Jeremy. Two men were found to have bled to death in the Sepik river as a result of severe wounds to their genitalia. Jeremy Wade arrives to uncover the creature responsible for the savage attacks.
While fishing for a possible food source, Jeremy makes an unusual discovery. He brought in a Red-Bellied Pacu, a fish native to the Amazon River. These fish, relatives of piranhas, use their strange, almost human-like teeth to crack hard-shelled nuts and fruits. However, they were recently introduced to Papua New Guinea, where they were faced with a completely different ecosystem.
As the investigation continues, Jeremy keeps hearing reports of an attacker with human-like teeth. All evidence begins to point to the Pacu being responsible for the mutilations. Jeremy eventually concludes that the ecological situation has forced Pacu to adopt a more carnivorous diet, which has led them to seek a wide variety of unusual food sources, including, in some cases, humans.
