Volcanic Island Terror is the fifth episode of the ninth season of River Monsters.

Episode Description[]

On a volcanic island in the Pacific, a fishing community is terrorized by something in the water that's left behind a trail of bloodied victims. The only clue to the attacker's identity is the puncture wound it's left behind.

Episode Summary[]

The episode begins with Jeremy Wade learning of mysterious attacks. Local fishermen reportedly met a dangerous creature that even they could not identify. This caused Jeremy to raise an eyebrow since the fishermen of that region in general have an unbelievable understanding of their environment and the animals that live in it.

The fish was described as being large and black in color. However, a fishing trip only causes Jeremy to draw blanks. Jeremy is able to nearly catch a large fish on a coral reef, but he was unable to identify what it was. However, on a trip into a river, he finds a scientist who has studied the fish of the region. He has also described several new species.

Jeremy watches footage taken by the scientist and sees a Papuan Black Bass, a fish that finally sounds like a possible culprit. While the sighting occured in a river, the fish is capable of living in brackish and salt water. Jeremy tries to catch one, but soon a rainstorm hits, and he has to move toward the sea.

In brackish water, Jeremy is a little ahead of the storm front. He manages to catch a Papuan Black Bass. Due to its large shape, aggressive behavior, and elusive nature, Jeremy is fairly certain that it is responsible for the mysterious attacks.
