The White sturgeon is a species of sturgeon native to fresh and salt water. Growing to around 20 feet long, these fish can be of serious size. Their appearance is often compared to sharks. They are also known to nibble on humans occasionally, although their lack of teeth means that their bite is not dangerous to humans. However, many still find it a frightening experience.
Alaskan Horror[]
When investigating the Lake Illiamna monster of Alaska, Jeremy Wade narrows his search to the white sturgeon. It can grow as large as many of the reports state and it can also be potentially dangerous when it jumps out of the water. Many witnesses claimed to see a very large fish similar in shape to a white sturgeon.
However, they are probably to spread out on the lake for Jeremy to find them easily thso he heads to the Columbia River on the Washington/ Oregon border. Here he catches a 90 pounder before landing a very large 300 pound specimen which he estimates is around 80 years old. This is one of the oldest fish in River Monsters. Another example of an old fish would be a 200 year old 700 pound Greenland Shark in the episode "Ice Cold Killer".
Legend of Loch Ness[]
The white sturgeon is mentioned in the episode however it was dismissed because of its docile nature. They have never been known to bite people to death. Also, it lacked the upturned boat hull appearance and even it was not large enough.
Prehistoric Terror[]
The white sturgeon is a prehistoric fish over 65 million years old. It is also one of the closest fish today to Dunkleosteus, a bony prehistoric terror. One was caught by Jeremy in Canada. Another fish that may be a little like the Dunkleosteus would be the Arapaima. Still, these are ray finned fish, not placoderms like the Dunkleosteus.
